There are merits, of course, to sticking to what you're already good at. Warren Buffet will do no one any favors by focusing on becoming a world class auto mechanic.
But within our core competency is room to grow and to try something new. Here's a few of the benefits of doing so.
Trying something new requires humility
Being bad at something is a prerequisite to being good at something. As a child, I struggled to go outside my comfort zone because I associated competency with worth, and actively avoided any activity I wasn't already good at. These limitations didn't help me, and they won't help you.
By intentionally introducing a new skill to acquire, you'll learn how to be a beginner again, how to put your ego in check, and how to push through the requisite embarrassment that accompanies any new skill.
Trying something new acquaints you with new mentors
Every journey requires a guide and a map. Meeting new guides who can mentor you through a process creates new connections that can pay dividends for years to come.
One of the best ways to build relationships with others is to put yourself in a position of need. Allow someone to help you, respond with appreciation, and a friendship may form.
Trying something new clarifies your self-awareness
When faced with a new skill to acquire, we are sometimes like adolescents at a dinner table, staring down a mystery, claiming we don't like it without ever having tasted it.
By giving a new skill an honest attempt, you'll learn within the first 2 to 20 hours whether you really do have the aptitude for it or not. And this self-awareness can be rooted in lived experience, rather than projected assumptions about what you can or cannot do. Most times, you're far more capable than you give yourself credit for.
