The Best Use of a Leader's Time
Overwhelm is real and activities necessary to running a business can easily swamp even the most capable leaders.
When that happens, keep this handy rule of thumb in mind:
The best use of a leader's time is the activity that will free up more of the leader's time in the future.*
When you're not sure how to proceed and the task list and project stack feel suffocating, focus on the work that can be done now that will enable other individuals or processes to do the work in the future.
This is often the work, like training, documentation, or delegation that seems less urgent in the moment but is most critical in the long run.
If you want to find ways to grow the business, you have to find ways to find, train, equip and reward competent folks to do much of what you're doing now.
Fight hard for the time to do the non-urgent but highly important work of doing the work that will buy you more time in the future.
