Clear Success is Measurable
Whenever possible, make the work quantifiable and time bound. As a formula, it's X to Y by Z. For example, we need sales meetings booked to increase from 15 to 25 per month (quantifiable) by June 30 (time bound).
Clear Success is Understood
The fewer metrics you track, the better. The leader's role is to identify the most critical actions and emphasize those over all else. Once identified, make the scoreboard that tracks these metrics large, public, and frequently updated.
Clear Success is Celebrated
A temptation will be to celebrate 'almost' wins. You booked 22 sales meetings this month, not 25. A big increase over the 15 from last quarter, but not worthy of a celebration. Donald Miller says, "Spiking the ball at the 5 yard line is called a fumble." Let the pain of almost achieving the goal motivate you further to achieve the next one.
