KISS

Keep it simple, stupid.

Or perhaps, keep it simple and straightforward.

This phrase comes from the world of spacecraft design, where unnecessary complexity likely ended in disaster. It has the additional benefit of being an acronym that abides by its own maxim.

In business, it's part of a leader's portfolio to adhere to this rule.

  • In your written communication, lead with the bottom line up front, highlight deliverables and action items, and make things skimmable.

  • In your goal setting, recognize that one goal is best, two is possible, but five is lunacy.

  • In your culture forming, ask yourself: am I rewarding what I want more of?

  • In your analytics, don't mistake cluttered dashboards for real insight. 30 KPIs is less helpful than 3.

  • In your documentation, don't require 15 pages where 5 paragraphs will do.

What are other areas where the KISS principle could benefit you?
