Whenever you need to present data, always show context. Quarterly revenue? Show data from last quarter, or the same quarter last year. Monthly contribution report? Show the change in the total number of donors, along with the average gift size, relative to last month and the same month last year. HR headcount tally? Show the increase or decrease over a period of time relative to historical trends. Point out anomalies and suggest a narrative to explain the data. Startup burn rate? Show a projection for when you'll run out cash based on best case, worst case, likely case scenarios. The underlying principle is this: Numbers without context is simply data. Numbers with context is useful information. Be useful. Add context.
